If you're a fan of Pretty Little Liars, you know that the show is full of twists and turns, secrets and lies, and of course, the mysterious and elusive A. A is the anonymous stalker who tormented the Liars for years, sending them threatening messages, blackmailing them, and even trying to kill them. But who is A? And why did they do it?
There have been many theories and suspects over the course of the show, but one of the most intriguing and controversial ones is that Aria Montgomery, one of the Liars herself, was actually A all along. Yes, you read that right. Aria, the artsy and sweet girl who fell in love with her English teacher Ezra Fitz, was actually the mastermind behind the whole A game. How is that possible? And what evidence is there to support this claim? Let's find out!
## The Clues
There are many clues and hints throughout the show that point to Aria being A. Here are some of them:
- Aria was the first one to receive a message from A after Alison's disappearance. She got a text saying "I'm still here bitches. And I know everything -A" while she was in Iceland with her family. Why would A target her first? Maybe because she was A herself, and wanted to start the game.
- Aria was also the first one to see Alison alive after she went missing. She had a hallucination of Alison visiting her in the hospital when she had an accident. Alison told her that she knew who A was, but didn't reveal their identity. Maybe Alison knew it was Aria, and wanted to confront her.
- Aria had a lot of secrets that could have motivated her to become A. She knew about her father's affair with Meredith Sorenson, a college student, and kept it from her mother for a long time. She also had an illegal relationship with Ezra Fitz, her teacher, and lied about it to everyone. She also had a history of mental illness, as revealed in season 3 when she visited Radley Sanitarium and met Dr. Sullivan's son Malcolm. Maybe Aria felt guilty or angry about her secrets, and wanted to punish herself and others.
- Aria had a lot of skills and talents that could have helped her be A. She was very artistic and creative, as shown by her love of photography, writing, and music. She could have used these skills to create the elaborate messages and clues that A sent to the Liars. She also had a knack for lying and manipulating people, as shown by how she fooled her parents, friends, and even Ezra about various things. She could have used these skills to cover up her tracks and deceive everyone.
- Aria had a lot of connections to people who were involved in the A game. She dated Noel Kahn, who was blackmailed by Alison and later became part of the A team. She dated Jason DiLaurentis, who was Alison's brother and had a crush on her. She dated Jake, who was attacked by A with knives in his punching bag. She dated Andrew Campbell, who was suspected of being Charles DiLaurentis, aka Big A. She dated Liam Greene, who worked at the same publishing company as Ezra and helped him write his book about Alison's disappearance. She married Ezra Fitz, who was revealed to be writing a book about Alison's disappearance and spying on the Liars for research. Maybe Aria used these relationships to get information or influence on the people around her.
## The Motive
But why would Aria do such a horrible thing to her friends? What was her motive? There are several possible explanations:
- Maybe Aria was jealous of Alison and wanted to take her place as the leader of the group. Alison was always the most popular, beautiful, and confident girl in Rosewood. She had everything that Aria wanted: attention, admiration, power. Maybe Aria hated Alison for being so perfect, and wanted to ruin her life and reputation.
- Maybe Aria was angry at Alison for knowing about her father's affair and blackmailing him. Alison found out about Byron's affair with Meredith when she saw them kissing in his car. She threatened to tell Ella unless Byron paid her money. Maybe Aria blamed Alison for breaking up her family and causing her pain.
- Maybe Aria was loyal to Alison and wanted to protect her from harm. Alison had many enemies who wanted to hurt her or expose her secrets. Maybe Aria joined forces with Alison to help her fake her death and escape from Rosewood. Maybe she continued the game after Alison's return to keep everyone distracted from finding out the truth.
- Maybe Aria was bored with her life and wanted some excitement and drama. Aria was always the most adventurous and rebellious of the Liars. She loved to explore new places, try new things, and break the rules. Maybe she was tired of her mundane and predictable life in Rosewood, and wanted to spice things up with some mystery and danger.
- Maybe Aria was mentally unstable and had a split personality. Aria had a history of mental illness, as mentioned before. She also had some strange behaviors and habits, such as talking to herself, having nightmares, and wearing a black hoodie. Maybe she had a dissociative identity disorder, and one of her personalities was A. Maybe she didn't even know what she was doing, and only remembered bits and pieces of her actions.
## The Conclusion
So, is Aria really A? The answer is... maybe. There is no definitive proof or confirmation that she is or isn't. The show never revealed the identity of the original A, who started the game before Mona took over. The show also never explained how Aria was involved in the final twist, when it was revealed that Spencer had an evil twin named Alex Drake, who was the ultimate mastermind behind everything. Maybe Aria was working with Alex, or maybe she was just another victim.
The truth is, we may never know for sure. But that's part of the fun of Pretty Little Liars. The show is full of mysteries and secrets that keep us guessing and theorizing. And Aria is one of the most fascinating and complex characters on the show. Whether she is A or not, she is definitely a pretty little liar.
