In March 2019, a group of over 250 Amish men gathered at the Hochstetler Farm in Knox County, Ohio, to perform an incredible feat of strength and teamwork. They were there to move a massive red barn from one side of the farm to the other, completely by hand, in the middle of winter!
The barn was made of wooden poles and weighed thousands of pounds. But that didn't stop these men from lifting it off the ground and carrying it nearly 200 feet across the field. They did it all in less than five minutes, without breaking a sweat or dropping a pole!
How did they do it? Well, the Amish are known for their strong sense of community and tradition. They rely on each other for everything, from farming to building to transportation. They shun most forms of technology and vehicles, preferring to use horses, buggies, and their own muscles.
They also have a lot of experience in barn raising, which is a common event in their culture. Barn raising is when a group of Amish people come together to build or repair a barn for one of their neighbors. It's a way of showing solidarity and generosity, as well as having some fun and socializing.
But this was not a typical barn raising. This was a barn moving! And it was captured on video by a local news outlet, Mount Vernon News. The video has gone viral, with over one million views on YouTube. People are amazed by the skill and coordination of the Amish men, as well as their humble and peaceful demeanor.
The video also shows the Amish women and children watching from a distance, cheering and commenting on the men's progress. They were there to support their husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons, as well as to prepare food and drinks for them after the hard work.
The owner of the farm, Joseph Hochstetler, was very grateful for the help of his fellow Amish. He said he needed to move the barn to make room for more crops and animals. He also said he was proud of his community and their way of life.
"We don't need cranes or machines," he said. "We have each other."
